Body
The instrument of dance. The term body may also refer to the body positions or shapes or to body movements.
- Shape - the body can contort itself into different shapes (i.e., curves, angles, twisted, symmetrical, asymmetrical) Also, various parts (arms, legs, head, toes, fingers) can take on different focuses (i.e., open, closed, relaxed)
- Body Movements – locomotor (walking, galloping, rolling), non-locomotor (moving the arms, twisting the body)
Space
The physical area in which the body moves; also, the area surrounding the body.
An element involving rhythm, tempo, accent, and duration. Time can be based on measured beats, as in music, or on body rhythms, such as breath, emotions, heartbeat.
- Time (fast, medium, slow)
- Duration (length of time for movement)
- Rhythm (even, uneven, speed)
- Energy (sharp/smooth, strong/light)
- Weight (light/heavy)
- Flow (bound/free)

Energy
The force with which the body moves (e.g., light, strong, sustained, sudden).
Relationship
The way in which two or more things are connected to or associated with one another.
